What is Sadaqa Jariya? Meaning, examples and virtues

Sadaqa Jariya is a form of charity whose effect does not end the moment you give. Where a one-off gift is over once it has been given, Sadaqa Jariya sets up something that keeps on serving, sometimes for years. It is charity that flows through time, and its benefit can continue after the death of the person who set it up.

A simple definition

The word sadaqa means charity, a sincere gift given to draw closer to God. The word jariya comes from a root that evokes something flowing, something that continues. Together, the two words describe charity whose usefulness lasts: as long as the good that was set up serves people, it remains a source of good for the one who started it.

The difference from ordinary charity is therefore its duration. Feeding someone today is a real good, but a one-off one. Installing a water point, passing on knowledge or planting a tree are acts that keep benefiting people long after the moment you do them.

The hadith of the three things

The idea rests on a well-known saying of the Prophet. The Prophet ﷺ said: “When the son of Adam dies, his deeds come to an end, except for three: ongoing charity (sadaqa jariya), knowledge that is benefited from, or a righteous child who prays for him.” This hadith is narrated by Muslim (Sahih Muslim, n°1631).

This text highlights three ways in which the benefit can continue: ongoing charity, useful knowledge passed on, and a righteous child who prays for their parents. Sadaqa Jariya is the first of these three, and probably the most accessible to everyone.

Concrete examples

Sadaqa Jariya can take many forms. Here are a few examples often mentioned in the tradition:

  • Digging or funding a well that gives water to a community.
  • Helping to pass on useful knowledge that keeps benefiting others.
  • Taking part in building a place that is useful to everyone.
  • Planting a tree that feeds and shelters for years.

These are different kinds of acts, but they share one thing: once set up, they keep serving without having to be redone every day.

Why planting a tree is part of it

Planting a tree has a special place in the tradition. The Prophet ﷺ said that no Muslim plants a tree or sows a crop from which a bird, a person or an animal then eats, without it being counted for him as charity. This hadith is narrated by al-Bukhari (Sahih al-Bukhari, n°2320).

A fruit tree brings together several qualities of ongoing charity. It is concrete and visible, it produces season after season, and its fruit benefits others besides the one who planted it: people, birds, animals. It is a simple act that puts a sincere intention into the real world.

How to give one, simply

You do not need to be rich or wait for a big project. A Sadaqa Jariya can be a modest act, done with a sincere intention. You can do it for yourself, for your parents or for a loved one who has passed away, by dedicating the intention to the person of your choice.

With Fruit du Paradis, you can fund the planting of a fruit tree in your own name, in the name of your parents or of a loved one who has passed away. If this speaks to you, you can choose a tree and give your intention a lasting trace.
