How to give Sadaqa Jariya: a simple, practical guide

How to give Sadaqa Jariya: a simple, practical guide

Sadaqa Jariya sometimes seems reserved for big projects. In reality, it is within everyone's reach. You can do it with modest means, as long as the act is sincere and sets up something lasting. Here is a simple guide to go from intention to action.

You don't need to be rich

The value of charity is not measured by its amount. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Protect yourselves from the Fire, even with half a date.” This hadith is narrated by al-Bukhari (Sahih al-Bukhari, n°1417). What matters is the sincerity of the intention and the regularity of the good, not the size of the amount.

A small contribution, made from the heart, can set in motion an action that keeps serving well beyond the initial gesture. That is precisely what sets Sadaqa Jariya apart: its effect lasts.

Concrete and accessible options

Several forms of ongoing charity are within reach of almost any budget:

  • Planting a fruit tree, which feeds season after season.
  • Contributing to a water point that serves a community.
  • Helping to pass on useful knowledge.
  • Taking part, even modestly, in a lasting and beneficial project.

Among these options, planting a tree is one of the simplest to set up. The Prophet ﷺ reminded us that no Muslim plants a tree from which a bird, a person or an animal then eats without it being counted for him as charity (Sahih al-Bukhari, n°2320).

Setting your intention

Before the act, there is the intention. You can give Sadaqa Jariya for yourself, for your parents while they are alive, or in memory of a loved one who has passed away. The intention goes with the charity and gives it its meaning.

Taking a moment to state this intention clearly, in your heart, is enough. There is no complicated formula to remember: sincerity is what counts.

What makes charity “jariya”

Charity becomes jariya, meaning ongoing, when it sets up something that lasts. A shared meal does good once. A planted tree keeps giving its fruit season after season. It is this lasting quality that turns a simple gift into charity that continues.

In other words, it is not the amount that makes charity ongoing, but its nature: the fact that it establishes a good able to serve over time, without having to be renewed every day.

Keeping a sense of balance

It is good to do this with humility, without expecting a specific reward, which belongs to God alone. You perform a good deed, you make a sincere intention, and you leave the rest to Him.

Doing it simply, regularly and from the heart is often worth more than a big project that never gets done.

A simple method, step by step

To take action without making things complicated:

  • Choose a lasting cause that speaks to you, such as planting a tree.
  • Make your intention and, if you wish, dedicate it to someone.
  • Set an amount that suits you, even a modest one.
  • Take action and, if possible, keep a record of what you did.

With Fruit du Paradis, you can fund the planting of a fruit tree in a few moments, in your own name or in the name of a loved one. If this approach suits you, you can choose a tree and start with a simple act.
