Sadaqa jariya for your parents: honouring them while alive

Sadaqa jariya for your parents: honouring them while alive

Many people wait until a parent has died to give charity in their name. It is a beautiful intention. But why wait? Our parents are still here. We can honour them now, while they can know about it, enjoy it, and sometimes even be moved by it. Sadaqa jariya for your parents while they are alive is just that: a concrete act of love that keeps on giving over time. Here is why this approach makes sense, and how to set it up simply.

Honouring your parents: a duty full of gentleness

In Islam, the place of parents is immense. Being grateful to them, speaking to them gently, taking care of them: all of this is part of what is called birr al-walidayn, kindness to one's parents. It is not reserved for a particular moment. It is a thread we weave over a whole lifetime.

Giving charity in their name is part of this kindness. We do not do it to ease our conscience. We do it out of love, out of gratitude, to give back a little of what they gave us. It is a way of saying thank you that does not rely on words alone.

Why not wait until they have died

We often associate charity with the deceased. Yet nothing requires us to wait. Doing good for your parents while they are alive has a special flavour: they are here. They can see the gesture, understand the intention, sometimes even smile about it.

And besides, nobody knows the future. Acting today means not putting off until tomorrow a gesture that matters. God willing, it will be a source of good for them as well as for you.

Charity that continues, not just a one-off gift

Giving once is already good. But some actions keep bearing fruit long after the first gesture. That is the principle of sadaqa jariya: charity that extends through time, without needing to be given again.

A meal given feeds once. A planted tree can feed season after season. The difference lies there: in duration. You set something in motion, and it continues.

The fruit tree, a very simple image

The Prophet ﷺ said: “No Muslim plants a tree or sows a crop from which a bird, a person or an animal then eats, without it being counted for him as charity.” (narrated by al-Bukhari, n°2320).

A planted tree is living charity. It grows, it gives fruit, it gives shelter. Every mouth it feeds can become a good deed. Linking this to your parents' names connects them to a good that breathes and lasts.

Making the intention for your father or mother

The intention, the niyyah, is at the heart of everything. You can plant, or have a tree planted, by dedicating the good to your father, to your mother, or to both. You simply state, in your heart, who this gesture is for.

The reward belongs to God alone. We promise nothing, we calculate nothing. We act sincerely and leave the rest to Him.

How to give them a tree, in practice

You don't need land or any gardening skills. With Fruit du Paradis, the planting is taken care of on site. Here are the steps, in a few words:

  • Choose a fruit tree.
  • Dedicate it to your father, your mother, or both.
  • The planting is carried out locally, by people on the ground.
  • You receive real photos and videos of the tree.
  • You can share them with your parents, or keep them to surprise them.

Telling them, or making it a surprise

Some prefer to let their parents know: “I planted a tree for you.” Just hearing it can be deeply moving. Others prefer to keep the gesture discreet, like a silent intention. Both are fine.

What matters is the sincerity behind the gesture, not the way you announce it. Everyone does as their heart tells them.

A gesture that remains, whatever happens

Our parents will not always be near us. But a tree planted in their honour carries on. While they are alive, it is a gift. Later, it will be a bond that remains. Between the two, there is only the continuity of one and the same love.

If the idea speaks to you, you can choose a tree at Fruit du Paradis and dedicate it to your father, your mother, or a loved one. The planting is done on site, and you receive real photos and videos. There is no rush. Take your time. And if your heart tells you to, give your parents a tree that speaks for you, today already.
