How much to give for sadaqa jariya? Finding the right measure

How much to give for sadaqa jariya? Finding the right measure

“How much should I give?” It is often the first question when you want to give sadaqa jariya. We imagine that a large sum is needed for the act to count. In reality, that is not how things are measured. The value of charity cannot be read from an amount. It lies in the intention, the regularity, and the good it produces over time.

The value of charity is not measured by the amount

We often confuse quantity and value. A large gift given out of habit, without heart, is not necessarily worth more than a small gift given sincerely. What counts is what the act means to the one who does it.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Protect yourselves from the Fire, even with half a date.” (narrated by al-Bukhari, Sahih al-Bukhari, n°1417). Half a date: the image says it all. Even a very small act has meaning.

Giving within your means, without putting yourself in difficulty

The right measure is first of all your own. Giving should not weaken you. You give according to your means, with what you can, without strain. A gift that respects your balance is a healthy gift.

There is no set amount for a sadaqa jariya. Everyone acts at their own level. A person of modest means who gives a little, regularly, makes a gesture just as sincere as someone else who gives more.

Regularity is often worth more than size

A small act repeated is often worth more than a single big one. Regularity builds a habit. It keeps the heart turned toward giving, without sudden jolts. It is a rhythm that lasts over time.

Consistency has a special value. A steady trickle of water is better than a big wave that passes only once. A small gift, renewed, keeps the bond alive and exhausts no one.

Start small, without waiting to have enough

Waiting until you have “enough” to give sometimes means never starting. The first step matters more than you think. It sets the act in motion. Then you adjust according to what you can, at your own pace.

You can very well start modestly, then come back later if the wish and the means are there. The essential thing is to have started, with a clear and calm intention.

The intention behind the gift matters more than the sum

Two people can give the same sum with very different hearts. It is the intention that makes the difference. You can give little, but with a sincere intention turned toward good. That is enough.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “When the son of Adam dies, his deeds come to an end, except for three: ongoing charity (sadaqa jariya), knowledge that is benefited from, or a righteous child who prays for him.” (narrated by Muslim, Sahih Muslim, n°1631). What makes charity “jariya” is not its size, but the fact that it keeps producing good.

Ongoing charity: when a small act lasts a long time

The point of a sadaqa jariya is that its effect extends over time. A modest gift can produce good for a long time if it funds something living. This is where the amount matters even less: it is not the sum that lasts, it is the benefit.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “No Muslim plants a tree or sows a crop from which a bird, a person or an animal then eats, without it being counted for him as charity.” (narrated by al-Bukhari, Sahih al-Bukhari, n°2320). A tree planted today can feed well into the future, without our having to give more.

How to find your right measure

There is no single rule. The right measure is the one that fits into your life without unbalancing it, and that you can keep up over time.

  • Look at what you can give comfortably, without putting yourself in difficulty.
  • Prefer an act you will be able to repeat.
  • Set a clear intention before giving.
  • Remember that regularity weighs more than the sum.

If you are looking for an act within your means, you can choose a fruit tree at Fruit du Paradis. You decide what suits you, for yourself, for your parents, or for a loved one who has passed away. The tree is really planted, and you receive real photos and videos of the planting. Whatever the sum, what counts is the act, the intention, and the good that continues. Take the time you need, and go at your own pace.
