What is Sadaqa Jariya?
Sadaqa Jariya, often translated as ongoing or continuous charity, refers to a good deed you set in place whose usefulness continues over time. Unlike a one-off donation, it keeps benefiting others, and its reward can extend long after the initial act.
A simple definition
The word sadaqa means charity, a sincere gift given to draw closer to God. The word jariya comes from a root that evokes what flows, what continues. A Sadaqa Jariya is therefore a charity whose effect does not stop: as long as the good deed you set up remains useful, it keeps being a source of benefit.
The idea is to go beyond the immediate gift and put something lasting in place. You do not only give once: you set up an action that keeps benefiting people, animals, or the land.
The hadith of the three things
The concept rests on a well-known prophetic saying. The Prophet ﷺ said: When a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three: an ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them. This hadith is reported by Muslim (Sahih Muslim, no. 1631).
This text highlights three actions whose benefit can continue: ongoing charity, useful knowledge that is passed on, and a righteous child who prays for their parents. Sadaqa Jariya is the first of these three paths.
Concrete examples
Sadaqa Jariya can take many forms. Here are a few examples that are often mentioned:
- Digging or funding a well that provides water to a community.
- Taking part in building something useful for everyone.
- Contributing to teaching and passing on beneficial knowledge.
- Planting a tree that feeds and shelters for years.
Planting a tree holds a special place in the tradition. The Prophet ﷺ said that no Muslim plants a tree or sows a crop from which a bird, a person, or an animal eats, without it being counted as a charity for them (Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 2320). A fruit tree produces season after season: it feeds, offers shade, and supports the life around it.
Why a fruit tree
A fruit tree brings together several qualities of an ongoing charity. It is concrete and visible, it produces over time, and its fruit benefits people other than the one who planted it. It is a simple act that anchors a sincere intention in something real.
At Fruit du Paradis, you can fund the planting of a fruit tree in your name, in the name of your parents, or in memory of a loved one who has passed. Discover how to plant your tree and give your intention a lasting trace.
